How it works

Your first three weeks.

  1. 01

    Day 1

    Drop in your seeds

Place seeds in the grow sponges and set them in the sixteen pods. Sow a few extra in the lit lower tray to get seedlings going.

  2. 02

    Day 1

    Fill it and switch on

Add filtered water and the included plant food, then switch it on. That's the setup done.

    • Pump: every 30 minutes, about 20 dB
    • Water: the 7 L tank needs a top-up 3–4 times a month
  3. 03

    About week 3

Cut, then move a seedling up

Herbs are usually ready in about three weeks. Cut what you need, and when a plant is done, move a seedling up from the lower tray.

No pod subscription

Plant what you like, from whoever you like.

Many smart gardens only take their own pods. This one takes standard grow sponges, so a packet from the supermarket seed rack works fine.

Branded pods$3–5each, from the garden's maker

Your own seeds$1.50each, with sponge and plant food

How often would you replant all 16 pods in a year?

You keep about $120 a year

Estimate. Branded seed pods usually cost about $3–5 each. A grow sponge, seeds and plant food come to about $1.50 or less.

All questions
Do I need to buy anything else?

Just seeds. Plant food with refills, grow sponges, baskets, domes and labels are all in the box. Any seed packet works.

How does the sprout tray work?

Sow seeds in the lit lower tray while your plants grow on top. When you harvest a plant, move a sprouted seedling up into the free pod, so there is always something new coming along.

How big is it?

About 20.5 in wide and 9.1 in deep, so it suits a long counter or a sideboard. The light arm raises up to 17.7 in as your plants grow.

How often do I add water?

The 7 L tank usually needs a top-up 3–4 times a month. The window on the front shows you when it's getting low.

Can I use my own seeds?

Yes. It takes standard grow sponges and any seed. No proprietary pods, no subscription.
